Cannon Care Homes focus on the whole holistic approach to the provision of care. This covers the complete spectrum of life, whether it is the care we deliver, the ambiance of the homes, the activities offered or the quality of food we serve.
This enables us to contribute to the wellbeing of each of our residents and achieve and ensure quality of life at whatever stage they are at, on their lifes journey.
Cannon Care Homes — Great Care, Great Carers, Great Careers
Our unreserved, overriding objective is to constantly seek and introduce ways in which our homes can improve the quality of life for all our residents, whether it is for those who live in our homes on a full time basis or for those who visit us for shorter respite stays or for day care.
We do so, regardless of the wellbeing of every individual, in the belief there is always something we can do to improve their quality of life. We achieve this by constantly reviewing the care each person receives, as an individual.
This encompasses the experience of care everyone receives, not just from designated carers or nurses, but from every member of staff, be they domestics, handymen, kitchen staff, administration staff and, of course, the manager!
We invest significantly in training for all members of staff in the knowledge that a better trained member of staff has more confidence to perform their tasks, which in turn leads to an improved quality of life for each resident which in turn makes the job more enjoyable for the staff, resulting again in happier residents.
A lot of our training courses have been designed with the assistance of the specialist Dementia Group at Bradford University, which has an international reputation for their pioneering approach in discovering and progressing ways in which the lives of those with dementia can be made as rich and fulfilling as possible.
However, the quality of life which our residents enjoy is not solely dependent on their care. There are three other key aspects which greatly impacts on their enjoyment of life…
Of course we acknowledge that meal times are a very popular activity in themselves. Cannon Care Homes offer a fully cooked English breakfast as well as other less filling options, such as muesli or other cold cereals, porridge which is freshly prepared every morning, fruit juices, toast and a selection of jams and marmalade.
For lunch, residents are offered on a daily basis a choice of eight, yes eight different meals, each served with nutritional vegetables or salad all prepared from fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible, on the day of service.
Desserts comprise a choice of at least six different homemade options, each clearly displayed in a bespoke chilled cabinet, as well as a daily hot puddy alternative. Again, these are all prepared using fresh ingredients in one of our kitchens.
Afternoon tea is always served with homemade cakes or biscuits and supper comprises a number of different options each prepared to order.
In between the three main meals, hot and cold drinks are always available on request. Obviously, any dietary needs and requirements are taken into account for each resident.
We don’t just pay lip service to this key factor in the life of each person within a Cannon Care Home. Activities are not just about a game of bingo on a rainy afternoon or sitting in front of a television.
Activities encompass many different aspects of life, for example helping with everyday home activities, the peeling of vegetables, the folding of ironing, the painting of a window sill, the planting of a herb.
It is also about external trips, for those who are able or would like to go to the local indoor hydro pool, to a garden centre, for a stroll on the sea front, weather permitting, or a sightseeing trip using our minibuses.
Poetry reading is especially popular for those who are bed bound, as well as aromatherapy from one of our three fully trained aromatherapists, music sessions with singing and dancing, discussion groups, drumming workshops, weekly Tai Chi sessions, bespoke physical fitness classes from our qualified personal trainer, arts and craft classes, gardening club, movie club as well as the occasional, well needed nap!
We pay particular regard to the ambience and environment in each of our homes, not only in the communal areas but also in each persons room.
Before a new resident arrives, they are given the choice of wallpaper for their room, as well as a choice of paint colour for their own ‘front door’. We also encourage each person to bring as many of their own belongings or a favorite piece of furniture because we want to make their room as homely as possible, to their taste and choice.
We also go to enormous lengths to ensure all communal areas are regularly redecorated and refurnished incorporating stimulating and interesting reminiscence areas with photographs and memorabilia which residents can enjoy and remember.
We go one step further…
All our homes have an attractive and useful General Store, decorated in a bygone era style selling useful toiletry items, cards, small gifts and confectionery.
All three homes have had a ‘Snug Inn’ introduced during the course of this year. Here our residents can enjoy a convivial chat with others, play traditional games such as dominoes and scrabble, as well as enjoying either a soft drink or something a little stiffer!
All the homes have a hair dressing salon and treatment room, and during 2014, we will be introducing a library into each home.
We continually strive on a daily basis to deliver on our promise which is, Cannon Care Homes delivers the "Best Care, the Best Carers and the Best Careers" within the sector.
