Emma made a large Simnel cake for tea on Easter Sunday for everyone to enjoy while Sophie made some delicious chocolate egg brownies.

Also, four of our residents can be seen modelling some Easter bonnets which were made at Thornfield.

Easter got off to a great start yesterday at Thornfield with a coffee morning and raffle. Everyone really enjoyed the homemade goodies and thanks again to all the staff for making events so special for the residents. Also thank you to Emma for her delicious looking simnel buns.

Three new wheelchair cars arrived today.

To ensure all residents have swift and ready access to doctors surgeries and hospital appointments Cannon Care Homes have invested in three vehicles specifically designed for wheelchair access and transportation. As always Cannon Care Homes are ahead of the game!

Celebrating National Quilting Day on the 19th March

The residents at The Check House regularily enjoy an afternoon of poetry with Cilla. In recognition of National Quilting Day last week, the theme revolved around needlework and quilting and the residents can be seen holding a wonderful patchwork quilt made by Cilla's mother before the war, which she very kindly brought in.

Emma at Thornfield made a delicious Baileys and chocolate cheesecake as a treat for St Patricks Day, while Chris at The Check House made some shamrock cupcakes for tea and the residents also enjoyed an Irish coffee.

Last week we finally finished redecorating the "middle lounge" at Silverleigh. It was officially opened by two residents when they cut the yellow ribbon. It is a light but cosy area for everyone to enjoy.

A wildlife treat for everyone at Thornfield

This morning Axe Valley Wildlife Park visited Thornfield with lots of creatures for the residents to hold and stroke. Its always a very popular occasion which is enjoyed by everyone.

Weekly help at Hospiscare in Seaton by one of our residents from Thornfield

Elisa who lives at Thornfield used to work in a charity shop during her younger years recently expressed an interest in doing so again. With the help and support from the management and activity staff Elisa now helps at Hospiscare in Seaton once a week and thoroughly enjoys it.

In her own words Elisa says;

" The hospice shop is a good cause. I enjoy being a volunteer for cancer research. I never had a paid job, I've always volunteered. It makes me feel valued and useful. I am very happy that I'm able to carry on volunteering while living at Thornfield."

Three new bathrooms for Thornfield

Over the last month we have installed three new bathrooms at Thornfield. One bathroom has a fantastic new electric bath which makes bathing easy and enjoyable for the residents while the other two bathrooms have been made into wet rooms. The residents all love the new facilities.

We are delighted to announce that our Head Chef, Chris McDonald yesterday became the winner of the Regional "Cook Off" for the NACC Care Cook of the Year Competition! His winning dishes were Pork Cheek in Red Wine (Cheeky Pork!) which is a favourite with the residents on our Daily Classic Lunch Menu, and Poached Meringue on a Sauce Anglaise with Raspberry Coulis.

Chris will now compete in the National Final on 8th June 2016 at Barking and Dagenham College in London.

St Davids Day and the first day of Spring

St Davids Day is celebrated annually on March 1st. It is the day when the people of Wales celebrate their patron saint St David.

March 1st is also the first day of Spring.

In celebration of both of these events Emma our chef at Thornfield made a traditional welsh loaf called barabrith which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone during afternoon tea.

Care cook of the year competition

Chris McDonald, our Head Chef at The Check House recently entered the National Association of Care Catering’s (NACC) Care Cook of the Year Competition. We are delighted to announce that he has been selected as a regional finalist. We all wish him lots of luck when he takes part in the “Cook Off” in early March.
