The Check House is a Grade II listed building set in mature, landscaped gardens overlooking the sea. This tranquil setting offers access to the coastal town of Seaton which lies between the picturesque resorts of Lyme Regis and Sidmouth - the gateway to the stunning Jurassic Coast.

The Check House has dual registration for both Nursing and Dementia care. Every resident is enabled to make choices and the staff support and help them to remain as independent as possible. Both respite and day care is also available.

Residents are able to spend time outside in our beautiful, peaceful gardens, or just enjoy the spectacular views of the sea and coastline.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) Inspection Report

The Check House is a grand building with many original features, such as lovely fire places, tall ceilings and an elegant staircase. All the bedrooms are en-suite with many having spectacular views of the sea. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their own belongings, including pictures and items of furniture to truly make this their home from home.

There are three passenger lifts, which provide easy access to all the floors. All rooms are fitted with a 24 hour call bell system.

The General Store and The Snug Inn are located in the centre of the home offering different areas of interest. Both are non profit making. The General Store has been designed to recreate an old fashioned shop with a small area displaying memorabilia and lots of old advertising labels from years gone by. Toiletries can be purchased and sweets are weighed out on old fashioned scales and sold in candy striped bags. The Snug Inn has just been created and provides a lovely area to relax in. This offers people an opportunity to play traditional pub games whilst enjoying a drink. With breathtaking views it is also the perfect place to read a newspaper or receive guests and enjoy a hot drink. Why not take lunch in the pub and enjoy fish and chips with a drink of your choice.

There is a fully equipped Hair Salon which offers hairdressing for all our residents and a Chiropodist visits the home monthly. Our physiotherapist supports our residents with mobility, weekly Tai Chi lessons helps our residents to maintain balance and our bespoke physical fitness classes from our qualified personal trainer is also proving to be immensely popular. Our Aroma Therapist offers relaxing massages on a one to one basis and residents can also be taken into the town to visit their optician or dentist, or alternatively in house appointments can be made if required.

These are many and varied and include specialist clubs focusing on particular interests which our residents may have. Amongst these are a weekly art club, and a gardening club, both of which are very popular. Physical activities are not only fun but important for maintaining mobility and residents can enjoy a weekly Tai chi session. This is often enjoyed in the garden, weather permitting. Residents also have the opportunity to swim twice a week in a nearby hydrotherapy pool if they wish.

Visiting musicians and Theatre groups regularly provide enjoyable entertainment and of course our in house activities also include popular games, quizzes and discussion groups. There are regular reminiscence sessions with the use of memory boxes to stimulate and encourage conversation and many areas of the home have been decorated with photographs and memorabilia which residents can both enjoy and remember . We have a minibus that takes our more adventurous residents out on visits to local places of interest several times a week and when the weather permits, longer outings and picnics are planned.

Daily newspapers are delivered to The Check House and we also have visits from a mobile library.

For those residents unable to attend a Sunday Service in Seaton we hold combined services and communion at The Check House.

  • Check House Activities

Meal times are a very important part of life at The Check House. Our restaurant style dining rooms have wonderful views over the sea, and one of the dining areas is located in The Snug Inn. Both rooms are decorated with elegance and comfort and provide the perfect environment to enjoy a satisfying and nourishing meal in the company of others. Residents are also able to have meals in their rooms if they prefer.

Breakfast is full of variety. As well as a full English breakfast which is freshly cooked to order from the kitchen, cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, juices, prunes, grapefruit and toast and jam or marmalade is also available.

Chris, our chef, prepares fresh homemade dishes each day and residents are able to choose from a selection of eight different dishes from our picture menu. This enables people to make individual choices regarding what they would like to eat. The desert cabinet is filled with a selection of tempting homemade desserts and there is also a daily hot pudding or a choice of a cheese board.

Chris spends time with the residents discussing their preferences and special dietary requirements. Particular care is taken with residents who have dietary problems and for those who have difficulty swallowing. Chris prepares liquidised food and presents the pureed food, piped onto a plate and shaped into quenelles. This enhances the presentation and allows those residents needing pureed diets to dine with dignity.

Pre lunch drinks are available at the bar and wine is served with the main meal.

Afternoon tea is served each day with wonderful homemade cakes, and snacks and hot and cold drinks are available throughout the day and night. We also provide a choice of cold drinks to the bedrooms daily.
