About Thornfield
Thornfield Care Home is situated in a quiet residential area on the outskirts of the lovely seaside town of Seaton, Devon. Seaton lies between the picturesque resorts of Lyme Regis and Sidmouth and is the gateway to the Jurassic Coast. Thornfield was originally an Edwardian Villa and was converted into a residential home in the mid 1980’s. Thornfield provides 24 hour care for up to 38 residents.
The dedicated and skilled staff focus on, and understand, the specific needs of each resident with a ‘person centered’ care plan. The care plan is used to provide the staff with the information they require to meet all the needs of the resident in support of their physical, spiritual, intellectual, emotional and social needs which enables each person to live their lives with dignity and independence.
Thornfield is now to be used as a template for training in dementia care in a new training initiative to be shown on the 'Aged Care Channel', a specialist TV channel, specialising in training for staff within Care Homes. This is being developed alongside Bradford University who specialise in training developments for staff in Dementia Care Homes, and with whom Cannon Care Homes has formed a close working relationship. Our staff are looking forward to this exciting opportunity and we feel this further training in dementia care will only emphasise the excellent quality of care we are giving to our residents.
We also offer an extensive programme of activities throughout the week and our two chefs prepare home cooked, fresh food in the Thornfield kitchen.
The home has recently undergone major renovation, creating a very comfortable and homely atmosphere in all the day rooms and a very attractive, light and spacious dining area for the residents.
Our Residents can also spend time outside in the safe and peaceful garden. We have plenty of seating areas and easy access to the garden for wheelchairs. Some of the activities are held outside, weather permitting, including afternoon tea and summer garden parties.
In 2009, Cannon Care Homes began a working relationship with Bradford University starting with a specific project at Thornfield. Paul Edwards, Head of Training and Practice Development of the Bradford University Dementia Group has written;
"Over the last year Bradford University Dementia Group, School of Health Studies at the University of Bradford has had the privilege of supporting the developments of Thornfield Care Home. The Home has developed its care staff to understand the needs of its residents and provide services that enrich a persons' quality of life. The Home has made remarkable progress over the year and Thornfield is soundly on a path to develop excellence across its service. The staff team and management are committed to continually develop the quality of care and ensure that people are treated as unique individuals with a full life still to lead.
Thornfield is on a journey to provide better care and that is to be applauded."
